The Central-West region is where the national capital, Brasília is located. Brasília is a city that was specially designed as the nation’s capital.
The most important institutions of Brazilian democracy are found there, such as the Government headquarters, Parliament and the Supreme Court. The city’s architecture has a modernist inspiration, with several buildings projected by Oscar Niemeyer. The states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul are characterized by the Pantanal, a wetland area with a complex ecosystem where many species of birds, fish, mammal and reptiles can be seen. The region has also several natural parks on the plateaus, which are known in Brazil as the “chapada”.
